Setting Goals
Self improvement begins when you set goals. You
give purpose to your life. You have a direction to follow. You
will know what path you want to take. Your goals should reflect
who you are and who you want to be. Don't let others set your
direction. The path they select for you will probably lead
to discontentment and feelings of low self esteem. You will be
trying to live up to someone else's expectations. Trying to be
what you are not leads to low self-esteem and failure.
Building Self-Esteem
A cornerstone for building self-esteem is the
values you hold dear. As we grow from children to adulthood,
our parents try to instill values into our lives. These include
respect for others and spiritual development. Self improvement
means your value system should also include your needs and
should be aligned with the goals you have set for yourself.
Focusing on Your Mental and Emotional
Self
You have to take care of yourself. You have to
acknowledge your needs. You have to be in touch with your
mental and emotional needs. What are they? Security? To be
loved?
What are you passionate about? What do you
enjoy doing? Express your needs to yourself and to others.
Don't keep your feelings bottled up.
Find an inner peace. You may be able to do that
through meditation or yoga. Taking walks through a park or
along a scenic route may be inspiring. Listen to your favorite
music. Read your favorite books. Don't be afraid to be
alone.
With self improvement you become aware of
what pleases you and nurture it. You owe it to yourself to
be the person you want to be.
Thinking Positively
When you dwell on all the negative aspects of
your life, you will feel your life has no value or meaning.
Self improvement allows you to believe that you have the power
to fulfill your destiny. There is always hope. There's no end
to what you can accomplish. Believe in yourself and no matter
what obstacles are put in your path, you can overcome.
Utilize your talent and ability to pursue the
goals you've set for yourself. Remove the naysayer from your
life. Inner peace comes with knowing that you are the architect
of your destiny.
Thinking Creatively
We all have moments when we feel there are
obstacles we can't overcome. In moments like this, conventional
methods don't seem to work. You have to "think outside the
box." Review the conventional answers to the problem. Think of
alternative solutions. You may find that what seemed impossible
is within your grasp.
When you start your journey to self improvement
you will encounter obstacles, mostly within yourself. Wipe away
the fear and anxiety of discovering who you really
are.
